Move your selector from dash vents to floor vents, then to defrost and see if the sound stops. Mine is stuck on either floor or defrost right now, won't direct air out through the dash vents. The gears in the actuator motors strip and the thumping will get worse until the gear is finally worn down and won't work at all.I had my 2008 Impala with knocking noise assessed twice. Both times the mechanics said it is the fan from heating or cooling. The Chevy dealership told me $1300 to fix. The first guy said it is common in this car and the only posaible harm might be its use of battery after you turn off the engine.

Hey guys I recently picked up a 2006 silverado and I am getting a clicking sound that sounds like its under the dash passenger area. All the selections for the ac/defrost/floor etc work correctly. It isnt very loud and you can oly hear it with windows up and radio off. To find out which actuator is bad, open the glove box all the way, you have to open it past the stops. You can then see the right temp actuator near the center of the dash and the recirculation actuator near the end of the dash. Put your hand on the actuators when you hear the clicking noise to try and feel which actuator is bad. See if the noise changes when you press the recirc button and allow the door to reach full open or full closed position. You can also open the glove box, release the retainer so it opens fully and you can get behind it, and put your hand on the recirc actuator (up and to the right) and feel if it is the one making the noise.
