Coloration. Color of amphibians is affected by the presence of pigment cells (chromatophores) in the dermal layer of the skin. Three classes of chromatophores are melanophores, iridophores, and xanthophores. The primary pigment in melanophores is eumelanin, which imparts black, brown, or red coloration. .
