The Grave Stele of Hegeso, most likely sculpted by Callimachus, is renowned as one of the finest Attic grave stelae surviving (mostly intact) today. Dated from ca. 410 ca. 400 BCE, it is made entirely of Pentelic marble. It stands 1.49m high and .92m wide, in the form of a naiskos, with pilastersGrave Stele of Hegeso. A contemplative seated woman picks jewellery from a box held for her by a standing slave-girl. The jewellery would have been painted on to the marble surface. The deceased woman’s name is inscribed above. The relief was found in the ancient cemetery of Athens, the Kerameikos.Slightly more dynamic, the sculpted fabric begins to show more folds and movement, as seen in the Grave Stele of Hegeso. Attributed to Kallimachos, the stele was created around 410 BC, and is made of marble. In this relief, Hegeso is shown to be inside a home and is picking a necklace from a jewelry box held by a servant.
