A quick and dirty test is to put a blob of waterproof grease on the face of the seal. If the cavitation goes away... then your seal is leaking air. If you decide to change the seal... you need to change the boot, and the O-rings in the stainless ring too.
I would wire brush the splines, use something to really clean the impeller side, use q tips to get all the grease out of the impeller side. Put new synthetic grease all over it. Make sure the bumper is in the end of the driveshaft.....before your grease the shaft up. Don't forget the plastic ring and seal.On The Shaft Failure.
