T-mobile data plan here in the US is compatible with Japan mobile networks. Never had any issues with google maps or quick Google searches. Video streaming (YouTube ) is out of the question though. We didn't need a pocket WiFi or Japanese SIM card during our trip. I would skipping them. Take care.
